Initial Provider And Opioid Use For Back Pain

Initial Provider And Opioid Use For Back Pain

A study that evaluated data concerning 216,504 new-onset back pain patients found that individuals who first consulted with a doctor of chiropractic were significantly less likely to be prescribed opioids by a medical doctor during the following year than if they initially sought treatment from a medical physician. The authors of the study conclude, "Incentivizing use of conservative therapists may be a strategy to reduce risks of early and long-term opioid use."
