Past research indicates the following are risk factors for dementia: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, physical inactivity, severe psychological distress, smoking, and low educational attainment.

A review of data concerning 8,563 seniors indicates that older adults with at least one risk factor have a 25% elevated risk for dementia; however, the risk jumps to 59% for those with two risk factors and 121% for those with three or more.

The authors of the review conclude, "Our findings suggest that reducing the combined number of risk factors would contribute significantly to reducing the incidence of dementia."
