Breast Milk May Prevent Heart Disease Linked to Premature Birth

The current research suggests that premature birth is associated with an elevated risk for heart disease later in life, possibly due to small heart chambers, higher blood pressure, and disproportionate increases in muscle mass in the heart. In this study, researchers observed that smaller heart chambers were less profound in preterm babies fed breast milk instead of formula. The finding suggests that exclusively feeding breast milk to preemies may result in both short-term and long-term health benefits.
