Artificial Sweetener May Wreak Havoc for Those with Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease characterized by inflammation in the digestive tract that can result in abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

In this study, researchers found that feeding the artificial sweetener sucralose to mice with a Crohn's disease-like condition resulted in increased bacterial penetration into the intestinal lining.

Though further research is recommended to determine if similar findings would occur in human subjects, lead researcher Dr. Alex Rodriguez-Palacios warns, "Our findings suggest that patients with Crohn's disease should think carefully about consuming… products containing sucralose and maltodextrin."
