However, a recent study suggests that excessive sugar intake may increase the risk for early death in a secondary manner. In the experiment, researchers observed that fruit flies fed a high-sugar diet experienced an unhealthy buildup of uric acid in the body, which can impair renal function. The research team notes that future studies are needed to see if such findings extend to human subjects.
